Someone recently posted the 'definitive' guide to 164 engine removal, from memory, not using an engine hoist. I've searched and not yet found it, anyone remember who it was?

Where is the ECU normally hidden and what is the red box(ecu?) in the boot.

Anything else that should come with the engine and box before the rest is recycled?

Are the drive shafts of interest for a hawk installation?

I already have the front calipers, heavy bits of kit aren't they.

Shaun,

The ECU on my donor was situated in the right hand side of the passenger footwell under the carpet and underlay stuff. Bit of a b*****d to unthread through the front bulkhead too.

Hi Shaun

In answer to what else should you keep here is what I found useful.

A couple of years ago I stripped a rolled 164S and found numerous parts useful not just nuts and bolts but also;

- The 164 gear lever and fittings

- All the fused relays - used for the headlights and spots.

- The wiring looms - I reused wiring to integrate the Alfa engine loom into the stratos with the correct coloured wires per circuit diagrams.

- Rear door multiplugs - When you have extracted the ECU loom you will have not only a mess to tidy but you will find the "dreaded plasctic elbow". I simply cut this off, shortened and rethreaded the loom where required and used one of the 164's rear door multi plug's to join it again. Apart form the alternator I can disconnect the engine loom in one place. I was able to buy new pins from a local distributor. (attached picture)

- Exhaust - I kept the manifolds and primary exhaust tubing to join to the HF2000 exhaust system.

- The handbrake cable - I have a Wilwoods all round. It needed shortening.

- Throttle cable - I reused the fittings when making a new longer cable for a floor mounted pedal

- ABS System - Since it was there and free I used it too

You asked about drive shafts - The inner Alfa CV joints were the only useful bit, I used them as a pattern for making drive shaft adaptors for the Beta drive shafts.

I hope this helps.

regards

Steve

I think Guy Mayers said that the engine could be removed from the 164 by unbolting the front sub-frame etc and lifting the body shell up.

I did eaxctly that, unbolted the front subframe, lifted the body and pulled engine and front suspension (what was left of it) out from underneath on a couple of trolley jacks.
Some of the front panelling had to be cut away as necessary.
