By the way, I know it's not a Stratos but it is kind-of son of. What do you think of the new race car? http://www.phoenixcarcompany.co.uk/

Hi Martin,

....and I can't properly describe how good that Monte of yours looks without expletives :) I used to have an S1 Monte and often wish I kept it. The Gp5 car was the ultimate version of it I think. I still have a Tamiya kit of one! Nice. Where will you be running the car?

Wow! :) :)
Mutt's nuts I'd say. I presume it'll go as well as it looks! ;)

Cheers guys!

How does it go? Well, we will see. The original produce 440 bhp from 1429 cc at around 1.4 - 1.5 bar. I was talking to a guy with an RS200 at the weekend. The BDT is 1800 cc and produces about 550 bhp from 2 bar.

We have 2043 cc - and can use upto 2 bar with the turbo fitted. Engine management is Pectel T6 with 8 injectors. Big, big intercooler. So what do you reckon - enough grunt?

Chassis wise, well the suspension is a close Dallara's design as we can get, plus we have adjustable Koni race dampers and a driver adjustable front anti-roll bar. Also we have current Pirelli rubber, which must be better than 1980 rubber. In the weight department we are currently UNDER the 750 Kg of the factory cars. However we are likely to have to add considerable ballast for some race series. In Britsports, for instance we would need to weigh in at 1100 Kg - ouch! Brakes should be up to it though, with 330 mm x 28 mm AP vented discs all round and we are trying Bremsport 4 pot calipers, although I have a set of APs should they not work out. We will are using EBC pads.

Aerodynamically the cd from Pininfarina's wind tunnel was .32 (I suspect without the rear wing, actually!) 400 bhp would make it a 170 mph car. 500 bhp would make it a 200 mph car.

I will keep the website up to date on progress, and put up a calendar showing track days, static shows, tests and races that we will be attending - so bookmark that page now!

Bye for now

Martin

p.s. initial wheel frequencies will be 128 cpm rear and 122 cpm front - but that's a secret so don't shout about it as the driver wants 600 lb springs all round because he believes racing cars should be stiff!

I split this into a new thread.

Martin,

Looks excellent.

I'm sure many people on this forum would love to be kept up to date with your progress - I know I would.

Is John Day still planned to drive it?

Stratos

Martin,

Do you have to run any sort of restrictor on the Turbo?

For rallying, we would have to have a 34mm restrictor on the turbo, which supposedly would cap engine output at a little over 300bhp.

Martin K
June 29th, 2005, 01:56 AM
Yes, John Day will be driving it.

Although Phoenix Car Company funded the car (me, in other words!) the deal was that John would drive it in return for putting it all together, once the chassis had been built by Maylum Racing Services.

It was originally intended that John would drive it in the AutoItalia championship as a replacement for his old blue thing (Beta Coupe) which was well past it's sell by date. Of course the build took a lot longer than planned and that series is no more. But we are looking at series like LMA, Britsports and Castle Combe Special GTs.

The website will have a calendar page soon, so you will be able to see where we are intending to be with the car (sorry if I am repeating myself).

Restrictors will depend on the series regulations - there are none in Britsports and they run a turbo equvalency factor of only 1.4:1! Incredible! However if the car is too quick the organisers reserve the right to slow you down.

It would be a shame to restrict it to only 300 bhp, but I guess we would go the route that the rally tuners have gone and look for a good wedge of torque from 2000 to wherever the 34 mm or other size restrictor comes into play - about 6000 rpm at 1.3 bar boost by my calculations. That should still give us over 300 lb/ft of torque from probably as low as 2000 rpm to 6000 rpm. I'd much rather have the 400 lb/ft plus we were aiming for! But I know a man who says he can get more air through a restrictor than anyone else (he has yet to prove it to me!) so we will see what we will see.

Restricted horespower would certainly limit the top speed we could achieve, but I think we could manage similar acceleration figures with suitable gearing.

Thanks for all the kind words

Martin

Did I over-fill the thread? Is that why I have 'spilt' out? ;)

I'd like to see that in a head to head with the NapierSport Grp5 Evo. :D

No, Martin, You didn't overfill the thread.

I just felt that it needed to be in a thread of its own, so the discussion could take whatever direction it needed without hijacking the thread about spring rates.

The thread about spring rates is very interesting and informative and should continue to discuss that subject.

Your race car is another subject that will interest many of us, and so now we have a separate thread to continue discussions about your race car.

That was one of my first thoughts too.

I was wondering if we could get them both to Abingdon next year.

We'll take them on!

The thing about the split was a joke, stratos. You spelt it S P I L T

heh heh!

No connection with the split/spilt debate, but are the struts holding the front splitter in tension or compression when at racing speeds?

Martin K
June 29th, 2005, 12:48 PM
Should be in tension!

A bit of a while since my last post, but the car will be at Goodwood on 22nd March for the LMC trackday.

This will be a test as far as we are concerned - there is still a lot to learn about setting up and driving the car.

When last dynoed we had 330 ft/lb of torque and 325 bhp on a 'modest' boost setting, which is how it will run on the later runs at Goodwood all being well, but we intend to start off with a lower boost setting while John get the feel of the car, scrubs in the new Avon tyres and we tweak the chassis tuning.

If you find yourself there, come and say hello!

Martin,

How did your day at Goodwood go?

Any chance of the car coming to Abingdon for the Sprint?

Lionel's Evo will be at the Sprint - would be great to see the 2 cars head to head.

CorseChris

Certainly a close match for power. The EVO was putting out 350/350 when I saw it mapped.

There is definitely a chance - we will try to get an entry.

I agree it would be good to see them side by side and competing against each other.

Looking at the regs I am not sure which class we should enter - modified sports (which it is) or replica - which it kind of is too.

Any suggestions?

Stratos

Martin,

You'd probably have to get it into Class 9 - Sports Libre.

The EVO is currently in Class 12 Stratos, but I'm sure Barry Guess would move it into Class 9 for us if we asked, then both cars would be in the same Class.

Sorry, but I have no idea of the weight - it'll certainly go up quite a bit when either Jerry or I climb in. (Sorry, Jerry :D)

If you are seriously thinking of this Martin, you'll need to act quick, cos I've heard entries are nearly full. (You can fax an entry to 01252 657959)

I know the Rally part of the Carnival is full, and already has a large reserve list.
