Ok guys, put me out of my misery. Where does one find the engine number on an Alfa V6 ? I just know its going to be a silly answer but my eyes aren't what they used to be you know. (my excuse anyway)

Gearbox end, just below the front bank head. On a flat machined panel. Impossible to see with the engine installed, unless youve got a fibreoptic scope.

So if I cant see it, the SVA man wont be able to check it to the paperwork then???
Or is that just me being silly. :)

SVA man MUST be able to see it, as must the DVLA inspector....
...sorry :(

There's not much you can do to make it more readable, other than showing him where it is and giving him a bright torch.

Well I found it and managed to read it so my next question,
How does the engine number sequence work on the Alfa V6 ? By my simple logic ( ) I would have thought if the last set of digits match, then the engine is the original. But, (yes there's always a but) the number as written on the log sheet is 1640430006106 whereas on the block it reads
AR06410006106.
so,
1, Does this mean the engine has been changed ?
2, If so, can I return the V5 for the Alfa to Swansea and have the engine number changed ?
3, Is the number actually the original engine ?
4, Where do I go from here if not.
Bearing in mind, I am almost ready for sending in the SVA paperwork, (yes I know, I should have checked this before now :( shouldn't I ) what are my options.
Thanks again.

Given the grief I had with my chassis number, I'd send off the V5 now and get it amended first so it reflects the numbers actually stamped on the engine.
6106 is the actual number so who knows why it wasn't properly documented as AR06410006106....we all know it's the same engine, but if the numbers aren't exactly the same, somebody will complain about it.

Well Chris,
If the ....6106 does reflect the original engine number, I am a little more comfortable. I had no reason to think the engine had been changed even though it had just been completely rebuilt. I wonder if I went down to the test station at Nottingham and asked Martin or Andy for a 'ruling' or 'interpretation' whether that would help me or actually work against me?
I suppose that if I sent all the SVA paperwork in anyway and sent the V5 to Swansea at the same time, theoretically  there should be enough time to have the ammendment back.
Life's never simple is it.

I wouldn't risk it Mick. Get the V5 right and back in your hands, then send off the SVA application. The DVLA & SVA are different deparments and have different rules/interpretations/guidelines/aims.
Like many others, my DVLA inspection involved checking engine number, chassis number and checking which parts came from where. SVA doesn't care about any of this, only evidence of age of engine so emissions test standards can be determined. DVLA won't care two hoots what the SVA man may think.

Think I tend to agree with you Chris. Better to be safe than sorry. :)

Hi Mick
I would have thought the SVA men will be interested to see it come from the Donor info for the age and the appropriate emmissions test. It will be Rick Youds the Vehcle inspector that will be more interested in the numbers matching to check if it was a ringer or to get an age related plate.
May be worth giving him a call at the Nottingham VRO. He's a friendly chap and may well know if it is only the last digits that need to match on Alfa's????
I'd agree with Chris though, it may also be better to just get the V5 ammended so that they match before you go thorough with it all, just in case...
Good luck
Rob
