I have 3 glovebox catches from Lancia Beta's, the 2 Mk 2 ones have keys, the Mk one does not. I would like to use the Mk 1 on the car (its better looking and is easier to fit) but dont have a key for it. Can the Mk2 internals be dismantled and put in the Mk1 ? I also have a key blank but dont know how to get a key cut for the Mk1 lock. Any ideas?

Dave,

I tried, unsuccessfully, to swap parts between an S1 and S2 glovebox lock. The cylinders are easy enough to remove from the housings, but they are different lengths. You might be able to re-code the S1 lock to fit one of the keys you have, but getting the pins out requires removal of a staked-in cover plate, and I'm not sure if this can be done without destroying it. I couldn't find a locksmith willing to try.

However, you should be able to get the lock code off of the bottom of the lock. It's a four digit number stamped into the plastic latch (I think). There's a guy in Australia who must have the correct key cutting machine and codebook, because he offers up new keys on E-bay from time to time. http://www.keys4classics.com/

I think a key cut from a code was something like $30 - not bad, and probably less than a locksmith would charge for attempting a re-code.

Do you have a spare spring retainer plate thingy? I have the lock, but the bit that holds it in place - a U-shaped flat plate - succumbed to tinworm and I can't find a replacement?

Scott, thanks for the reply.

Chris, yes I do have the retaining clip for the Mk1, does this mean you have a complete lock with key?? If so let me know what you want for it and postage.

Thanks

Yes I do, but it's the one for my car! I just don't have a way of holding it on just now and need a spring.
