Bit of a b******s moment tonight..... Having built the new Gp4 dash with the rev counter right in the centre line of the steering column and the speedo offset to the left and lower so it can be seen through the wheel I connected the cable for the first time tonight. Needless to say it fouls the chassis member behind the dash so it won't fit.
I have two options, the easy one is to swap the main gauges around which is what I've done but I'd still prefer the original layout.
The second option is to attempt to convert a speedo to run with the electronic signal from the sender on the Alfa gearbox. Has anyone tried this yet and if so, was it an easy modification? If nobody has tried it yet does anyone have a scrap 164 instrument cluster so I can experiment?
Cheers

I tried this mod with a thema speedo unit. It is possible, quite fiddly, but worth the effort. I assume that the alfa speedo is the same as the lancia.
Now that you mention it, i'm surprised that this hasn't been a regular request. If you want pics let me know so i can find the offender.

I have also looked at doing this and even have got as far as connecting up a sender etc from a lancia thema. Not sure that I have it right though as it seems you have to use the 124 mileometer gogs and use the electronic stuff fronm the thema. any advice pics or diagrams would be great.
Thanks in advance

I'm finishing off my GP4 dash and have a mini (60mm ish) speedo which is cable driven. I'd like to go electronic if possible....Is there a simple solution to using an elctronic speedo? Could I use the existing electronic gearbox sender on the 164 24V and transfer the guts out of the 164 speedo? What are the possible solutions?

I will be using this electronic speedo, its a bikers speedo works with reed sensors onthe wheel hub. Its 48 mm in diameter but i will put it in a 52mm housing with the same bezel as the other Veglia gauges.
Only disadvantage is the digital odometer.

Any one making progress on this subject??
My speedo uses some magnets to be glued on the hub to trigger the read sensor. The read sensor seems a simple switch that makes contact every time a magnet passes by. The Alfa sensor looks a bit different, i tried to measure it but failed. Is there a way to measure the Alfa's sensor when turning the wheel??? The top pic is the sensor from the electronic speedo, the lower is the Alfa sensor.

Tim uses a electronic speedo and sensor on the front, you could ask him...
This article (http://www.emeng.gentlyhosting.co.uk/Electrics/SpeedTrans.htm) covers calculating the numbers.

Hi Guy
I have installed an electonic speedo........ the internals and electonic parts were done by Speedy Cables (Andy Barraclough).......... they weren't cheap and delivery was crap however when it was all plumbed in it worked ok

I'm using the original 24V electronic set up on the gearbox linked to an 84 GTV internals with odometer (GP4 dash). To ensure accuracy this (http://www.jaycarelectronics.co.uk/productView.asp?ID=KC5435&CATID=&keywords=speedo&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=) appears to fit the bill
