View Full Version : Rear Bulkhead

I’ve been looking at my rear bulkhead moulding (not the sloping version) on my Hawk; can anyone tell me if the top edge with the lip under the rear window is supposed to sit on top of the chassis rail or on the face? If I put it on top there is quite a gap at the bottom over the sill part of the chassis.

Bas, if it's anything like Gerrys Gp4 dash loulding the return edge is there to give it some strength in transit and also allow a neat curved straight edge once trimmed off from the back. I never used it on my car - the idea of a thin sheet of fiberglass alone didn't appeal!

Thanks Guy that could be the solution, has anyone fitted it?

Not me, I've gone for a ally bulkhead(sloping, bit more than usual too)

Mine has a vertical alloy bulkhead, but I was planning on using a vertical fibreglass one as a finisher for the cockpit side.
I'd rather have it sat on the chassis legs as a priority and then see where the top (under the rear window) ends up.
Are the leading edges (the parts that point forwards) supposed to be riveted or joined in some other way to the rear edge of the door apertures? I had a look at Bernard's at the weekend, and I don't think his were?

Hi Brent
Mine is an upright bulkhead too, I just used the Fibreglass as a card to cover in (lightweight!) Carpet and to hold insulation in between it and the Ally Bulkhead Engine bay side. It had already been cut down to a flat panel by the previous builder though though so doesn't reach all the way across. I just panelled in with alloy and foam filled the sides towards the rear quarters from the vertical part of the Chassis so there is about two inches of insulation all the way across. Cuts out noise and heat but will make it tighter when the v6 goes in.....Might get slightly modified we'll see...

Any pointers as to the best way of sealing between the roof & the rollcage above the rear window?

You could try using some expanding foam, trim it back flush then use some intumescent sealer, kind of smeared over the foam to give it a flat surface. Just check that the sealer can be painted over though.

Doing the above with intumescent foam is easier,

Chris
Pardon the pun, but can you expand on that?
What is intumescent foam?

It's aerosol foam, except it's fireproof. Used in the building industry for sealing round fire doors. I used Envirograf PVE/A polyurethane fire retardant foam in my bulkhead area. http://www.envirograf.com/products/product044.html
Cost about £15 for 750ml can, which included personal delivery from Aberdeen to my work (170 miles) by the supplier's telephonist. I don't think that's a regular feature of their delivery service, but she was passing the door going on holiday!
