Just bought an Alfa 164 today, its a 12 valve 3 ltr. from 1991. I will be driving it the next two months before I take the engine, gearbox and brakes out. Just wondering what parts I should look out for when removing the engine, especialy the wiring  . Where do I cut the existing loom, or do I have to take it all out? I also read about someone using the Alfa 164 driveshafts, I think?, is that a possibillity or are the Beta ones the better option?

Take out the whole engine management loom, including the relay packs that are mounted at the front of the engine bay. Note that one of those relays has a diode within it, and is rather expensive if you want to buy a new one (from Alfa at least)

The engine wiring loom will come out intact if you take your time, the ecu is inside the car at the bottom centre of the dashboard. As usuaual its a pig to get the large conector out the hole in the bulkhead. If you dont want the driveshafts use a burning torch to cut them and the exhuast, saves a lot of time.
Good luck

Easiest way to remove the engine is to drop the subframe on the deck! Just jack the body up to get at the exhaust. From memory you'll need to undo the brake calipers and the strut mounts plus the steering arms and the cooling system/aircon. Then the assembly can be dragged out, dismantled at leisure before the subframe and struts are bolted back for disposal. Sounds easy dunnit!
