Is there anything 'special' about the 24 valve Cloverleaf engine?

The seller was looking for £1500 ono so it sounds a wee bit expensive
given that I would only really need the engine and box.
Probably not too bad for a whole car if that's what I needed.
It is a 93 model so are there any problems etc to look out for.

As per other topics, the engine internals are the same.

The one difference is the intake runners, which are larger diameter (and give rise to the 20bhp power increase).

Thing to watch if getting any of the Alfa's as a donor, the 'red key' type includes an immobiliser which is controlled by a sensor coil of some sort around the lock barrel. If the key fob is not in close proximity to the sensor, the engine management will not operate.

Mike,
this is not really thread related but I would just like to say welcome to the forum.
Can I just ask are you the owner of the Corse featured in Guy Crofts twincam book?
I was talking to Hugh Carson some time ago and he told me about your car. It was mentioned a little while ago in the forum and we wondered where you had got to.
Welcome,
John

Yes it's my car in the book and it still has the volumex unit
except I built a fuel injection system for it.
Always kind of fancied the V6 route though.
I haven't done anything with the car for a few years due to other
comitments but I'm thinking long term project when I spotted the
Alfa for sale.

Mike,

I would be interested in a bit more info on the FI you put on the volumex lump. Also, the front brakes(and possibly the rear) on a 164 are of use and may help offset the purchase cost.

Mike,
I did not think there could be two Mike Rosies about both with Stratos replicas!
Are you still in Scotland? There are getting to be quite a few cars north of the border these days.

I got a big throttle unit from some old BMW and made a a new manifold to bolt on too the inlet of the blower.
The manifold was made primarily out of an old aluminium cylinder cut and welded to suit.
I then fitted four cosworth sierra injectors to the manifold pointing into the blower inlet.
I replaced the standard dizy with one from some old fiat which had no advance mechanism.
I fitted a pickup at the crank pully and welded a couple off protrosions on to the pully
for the picup to detect.
The system was controlled by an M3D management system.

I had some problems with the ignition side to start with but it turned out to be the
M3D system which was repaired by them.
I have a lambda probe in the exhust which can be displayed on the PC when the system is running.
It really needs some more time on the rolling road and I have thought about trying to
get the injectors fitted in the inlet manifold where they really should be like the early
037 engines with the bigger blower.
It certainly gives plenty of contol over the fuel and ignition.
With the Guycroft head and new pistons I think I was getting about 175/180 BHP
but that was with a defective Ignition system at that time.
