View Full Version : Hawk Flexi steering?

I noticed the Triumph steering joint that fastens to the splined end of the steering rack pinion has an amount of flex. Either that, or there's something wrong with mine?
The thing is, the rubbery washers on this part look a bit 'old' on the one I've got. Are these washers something that would be available from a Triumph specialist?, and if so can anyone recommend one?

Hi Chris, Checkout Spitfire GT6 & Triumpth 2000 If i'm correct they used U/J joints with the sme splines

When the rubber perished on mine and dropped out I just welded the thing solid. Having said that the intermediate shaft kinda floats on my car but I've never experienced any binding or tightness in the column so I guess everthing lines up and the small amount of play the rubber allows isn't needed on mine...

I hav a solid bush in mine now as the rubber has disintergrated and I don't appear to have any problems.

Just to recap on this thread that I started on the Triumph Herald/Spitfire etc. flexible steering joint that is fitted to Hawk/Transformer Stratos replicas.
Don't ask me why, but I decided I wanted to retain the 'flex' in the joint. The rubber washers on my old steering joint looked a bit past their sell by date. The washers have a countersunk shape and are not available as a separate part. To replace the rubber washers, you need to buy a whole new joint. This is because the 4 bolts that hold the joint together are tightened to squeeze the rubbers enough but not too much. Then the ends of the bolts are 'squashed' (technical term) to stop them unscrewing themselves, and that also stops any tampering. (see photo of new joint)
The old joint HAD been taken apart and then lock wired on re-assembly (for safety). (see photo of old joint)
