View Full Version : Front Alfa brake problems

I've assembled the front caliper mounts for the first time, using Hawk's kit and Alfa calipers. Why do I always expect things too go together first time? I've been through our archive, and don't see the answer there, so all you with similar setups, HELP! :(
The inner rim of the disc touches the inside of the caliper mounting bracket. It's as if I needed a 2mm thick spacer between the disc and the hub to move it outwards. I can't see where I'm going wrong? My (aftermarket) discs are 285mm diameter, while my manual says the front 164 discs are 281mm, but this should result in the circumference touching, not the inside.

While talking calipers, the manual says the bolts connecting caliper to mount bracket should be replaced every time coz they're a special self-locking ones. I take it normal ones with locking compound would do?

OK, 5 hours on the internet, (and 5 hours and £180 nearer divorce) later, I think the problem is that I have 12v discs (285 X 22, instead of 281 X 26) and 24v calipers (Lucas, not Girling). When the new discs arrive, we'll see. Watch the Buy & Sell section! :o

Make that 2 steps back.

Chris I have had 2 sets of 164 discs from factors, funnily enough they are the correct diameter but have differet offsets, one set needs shimmed out from the hub (i used the shims from the beta wheels) the other does'nt.

cant remember the exact offset though.

opps - brain fade- Mine are four stud integrale discs but still have the different offset problem.

Chris,

What was the result of the offset issue? Surprise, I'm in a similar postion!! I could do with a few additional mm's offset on my disk. I'm using 284 x 22mm disks with 43.5 offset. I was thinking of fitting a spacer between hub and disk. Any thoughts? Roger mentioned Beta shims, are they spacers in this application.I'm running 5 stud.

Allen,

There are spacers fitted on the 164, approx 3-4mm i think.

John,
I've seen the "spacers" on the 164 donor list. Do these fit between hub and disk?

My 24v discs fit to the hub without spacers., using Gerry's 164 caliper mounts. I use spacers for mounting my wheels (5mm front, 10mm rear I think), as I have zero offset wheels.

Allen,

Re the spacers. I think they were between disc and rim but would surely turn down to fit inside the disc 'hat'.
