I know it may be not be in keeping with historical accuracy but has anyone fitted or considered 17 inch rims? I am looking at building my new Hawk G4 a la Chequered Flag (Coleman 78) so using minilight type split rims( probably by Ultralite at Glos.) 8in front 10 or 11 rear. Tyre availablity is good for 17 , I run 225/245 Toyos on my road Nissan 200SX on 9x17 rims and they work very well. May be there is a problem on the Hawk with arch clearance does any one know?

I think this one's been done before in various threads and the general feeling was that anything over 16" looks a bit 'modern' for the car. The Stratos originally used tyres of about 650mm diameter so if you're going for 245s its obviously got to be 40 profiles or less.

DavidM,
Not sure where you are located, but here is a company in the US that makes 17" Minilite wheels with custom offsets. The prices are really good too.
I'm planning on using these on my Corse.
Look at the photos link, it will be the first picture.
Hope this helps.

Not that it really matters, you've probably already seen this for yourself, but here is a comparison between 15" wheels and 17" wheels in picture form. (base picture thanks to Hawk Cars) Mind you though, going to 17s makes for a very hard time finding the right rear wheel aspect ratio for a GR4 body:
I would want to run these: 225/50-15 Front, 345/35-15 Rear
But for 17s, with similar overall diameter, you would need:
225/40-17 Front, 345/30-17 Rear
The 17's front size isn't too hard to find, but the rear is a real pain to try to find.

also, you said you ran a 225/245 setup on your Nissan, a similar setup for 17s on a strat would probably be 225/40-17 and 245/40-17
