Hello,
My chassis is now 15 + years old and is starting to show rusty spots in places (Longest ever build?).
I intend to clean off all loose pain and treat bare metal and rust with a rust treatment / primer before repainting.
What are people's views and experience on the different products available?
Is there a 'best by a long way product' out there?

Peter,
I am in the same boat as yourself. My strat should be ready for paint in the next four weeks. Various places on the chassis are showing fine surface corrosion and there are a lot of tiny blisters under the original coating. It would be a real pain to have to blast the affected areas and i won't be removing the centre tub for anything. I wanted to paint the framework the same colour as the outer bodywork but i don't know if i could spray a coating on that neutralises the rust. A pal who is a painter says he doesn't know of a product to suit. Our best bet may be to look in the classic car mags, we may find an answer there.
John.

I thought the POR15 product looked good.In the end I went own the angle grinder/wire brush/Hammerite products route.

POR15 seems to get good reports...not used it myself as yet but if I was stuck not being able to blast/etch-prime/paint or galvanise/paint, then I think I'd give it a go....

While on the subject of rust, I had been told that Waxoyl could damage glassfibre and shouldn't be left in contact with it. I checked this with the manufacturers, and it's not true. So we can squirt it in the crack between the centre bodywork and the chassis.

I pumped Waxoyl into all those nasty, unseen places, but we'll have to wait at least another 10 years to see if it's worked! Power coating is certainly showing its weaness already (but then I hadn't expected much from it in the first place.) If I thought I was going to be driving for another 30 years, I would have gone the full galvanising route.

(Oops! That was Powder coating in case you wondered!)

Hi All
I have found an article in Practical Classics comparing different products.
Hammerite Kurust came out best, they didn't test POR15 but by my rekoning the zinc phosphate coating that this lays down should be very good. Has any one got any long term experience of it?
Presumably I shouldn't post the article on the site??

Peter,
No firsthand experience with POR15, but a number of acquaintences who restore cars professionally swear by it.
I've been told that it works very well on areas that are already rusted, but does not work particularly well as a rust preventative on areas that aren't. Tends not to stick to rust-free surfaces.

Thanks Scott,
Mine will be a mixture when I have wire brushed a bit. I think I'll stick to KuRust - the review I have seen was done on rusty steel so no saying whether it will be any better than POR which wasn't tested.
