Hello chaps,
I want to fit an electric water pump to aid cooling but i was wondering can this conflict with the mechanical pump on the engine as the flow rates could be different, thanks.

Cooling seems to be a perennial problem that raises it's ugly head lots of times. The best aids to cooling are careful ducting around the radiator, especially the top of the rad to the undeside of the nose panel and efficient (Manually operated) electric fans. And careful bleeding! But, if all else fails let us know how an electric pump helps! I don't think anyone has resorted to that yet.

I know Chris Smith has one fitted.

.....I think Phil D, Jerry B and Roger D, all do too!
Best ask them about how they set them up, but I do believe they are all happy.

I fitted one for competition use, due to the extra stress put on the standard system. (plus the ability to let in run on after stopping the engine to avoid the potential heat sink problem) All I can say is that it works brilliantly, I can run at competition speeds with no water temperature problems (which is more than I can say for the oil temp. so have just fitted a laminova oil/water cooler. the success of which I will have to report after the next rounds at Snetterton in 2 weeks).
As regard the water pump either grind off the impeller and run the standard "fan" belt, or as I now have done remove the impellor weld up the water pump housing and run the belt to the alternator only. (one less thing to fail).

Thermostat needs cutting out of the top hose/thermostat assembly, the EWP set up comes with a controller that takes the form of a sensor which is positioned in the top hose assembly this controls the speed of the pump and subsequent cooling. If you do this it is important to blank off the conection between the two lower sections of the water block ie a piece of ally between the "water in" piece and the "water from the heads" piece, I hope this makes sense.

EWP, oil/water oil cooler and citroen 2CV alternator fitted!
Oil temp much improved only 3/4 the way up the guage as opposed to off the scale with prev arrangements, despite serious thrashing at Snetterton this Weekend.
Finished 5th out off 22, Fasrest lap 1:22.69 = average 84.98 mph on treaded tyres in a class C car.

Excellent news to hear that your all sorted roger,i think i understand what i have to change but i have to be honest i'm a bit stupid when it comes to getting my head around the cooling system.

Hi all what size oil cooler is that Roger & is it from Demon Tweeks, they seem to do 3, Regards Mark.

it is the 245mm one - the largest that would fit in the available space for plumbing.
note the alfa 75 inlet hose connector which enters the water connectors from the rear this allows room to fit the cooler otherwise with the 164 inlet there is no room unless you fit the cooler in front of the engine - too near the exaust manifold for my liking!!
However I doubt this setup will be necessary for a road car, when I ran the V6 on the road I never had problems with oil temp.

MMMMMMMMM.....Hibaldstow. I,ve spent many happy hours rallying around that airfield. Mark, is it still used for any form of motorsport? I did hear some talk that it may be open for vehicle set up and testing runs but cant confirm that. I seem to remember that when rallying stopped (just a few years ago, honest) most events went to either Lindholme or, more often, Manby.
Happy days.
Mick. :)

Hi Mark, my parents live in Glentworth, just off the A15. Must be about 10 miles from you.
i lived round there for a long time, and know the area pretty well.
Will give you a shout next time i'm round there, especially if i'm in the Stratos.
Cheers

Hi Hibaldstow is only used for parachute jumping but Blyton airfield is used for set up, grass track , rally cross & a rally school. PS can you remember rallying at Hemswell ? when they used to go around the old cinema now used for car boot sales only. Also kirton Quaries (kirton is where I grew up) Regards Mark.

Mark,
Yes I remember it well. We used to rotate stages between Hemswell, Hibaldstow and Kirton in Lindsay, then back again for another loop.
Happy days eh!

Yes Mark,
The Firecracker, Morning Mist and even the Dukeries 'Ystra' rallies all used that area several times. Did most of them several times in Sunbeams, Escorts etc. Long time ago now but I do remember we won the morning mist one year and came 3rd on the firecracker.
I did win the east midlands road rally championship twice, mainly using events in that region.
Shame they dont do historic road rallies. I'd be in my element.

"Shame they dont do historic road rallies. I'd be in my element."
Ah, but they do !!
Probably the main reason for my Stratos kit remains untouched, I spend all my time fettling an Alfa Giulia Sprint GT, after its Saturday night forays !!
( either that or repairing my son`s Corolla AE 86, which is verging on historic now .)

Now that would be a dream come true- thrashing a stratos replica through the lanes on a saturday night.
I remember competing against Porsche 911's on the Caernarvon and Anglesey MC Palferman Rally back in the early 80's, along with Chevette HSR's and ex works Sunbeams. I can just picture guy's faces if anyone could turn up in a Stratos!
