On the Hawk front suspension, does the inner end of the lower "wishbone" need spacers to keep it in the middle of the bolt, or does it float free?

Chris,
If memory serves, there are spacers on the inner end of the lower front wishbone. I can't remember what size they were - somewhere around 10mm, but I'm not sure. I do know that they were among the spacers that Gerry included with my kit.

They must be used otherwise the inner end of the wishbone will move causing the outer ball joint to pivot around the leading link mount point which will give steering input under braking/acceleration however slight. They can be a bit of a pig to assemble so here is a tip...
Cut down a bolt of the correct diameter for the rose joint to the same length as the gap where the joint/spacers fit, then preassemble the whole lot onto the bar so that it can be offered into the correct place and then tapped out using the correct bolt.

Verysmart thinking, young Mayers! I like it. Does the inner end want to be in the middle, front or rear of the gap?

I would say that anywhere for initial set up is ok. There is nothing to obstruct it's travel at either end as far as I can remember. What may influence your positioning is not symmetry within the gap but steering geometry. The feel of the steering is best with as much castor as you can get, lots of self centering. That's acheived by pulling the lower ball joint forward as far as possible. Some of that can be acheived by putting the inner end as far back as possible I'd have thought...
