Been fitting LSD to gearbox the other day. Not quite as straight forward as I had been led to think.
There is a shim fitted to the nearside output shaft that seems to alter the preload. If I tighten both diff output shaft retaining collers the shafts lock up solid. It would seem I need to change the shim for a thinner one. I dont have an alfa parts cd, Can anyone give me a part number to go by. Also what is the correct procedure to measure the clearences involved?
Chris Richard, you fitted a diff not long ago any problems?
Thanks
Stephen

You need to put it together, measure the distance, calculate the shim thickness you need, then order it from an Alfa dealer. It takes a couple of weeks coz it has to come from Italy.
Steven, I've emailed you the relevant bits of the manual, and the parts numbers for the different shims available.
This is from the Alfa cd, under Manual Transmission/Differential Adjustment. Group 13, Page 35 on my 24v cd. The parts disc supplied the parts numbers.I can only post the manual page in 2 bits,

Thanks Chris,
I have my own idea about how to measure to find the shim thickness but I may be wrong. Can you email the method used in the workshop manual.
Thanks

Chris/Stephen,
Just a couple of queries regarding the LSD install, did you have to use a puller/press to get the bearings off/on ? Also, what oil are you using and how much do I need to order ?
Cheers,
Chris

1st question you dont want to know I would use a puller next time.

No need for special tools. The old bearings stay on the old diff in the bin. The new ones drifted onto the new diff easily. I used an offcut of 2" exhaust, a block of wood and a mallet. Took 2 minutes.
Castrol Hypoy LS gear oil 1849 - I bought a 5L bottle. Manual gives capacity as 1.8L
