First run up to working temperature today revealed a u/s water temp guage (fixed), u/s oil temp guage (half way there), and an airlock in the radiator pipes. Infra red thermometer really useful here.
My outlet pipe from the radiator does an inverted U which is full of air. It's a Samco 135 degree bend. Is there a way to put a bleed port through the hose?

You must have a bleed valve at the top of the radiator or you'll never get the air out. In theory you want the inlet at the top (cold water falls) so the bleed should be up there. Where on earth does it go with a 135 degree bend? Back out into the street somewhere?
If it's really screwed up, it should be enough to loosen the hose clips and let the air out there, not forgetting to keep the header tank full...

I think we need a whole website on cooling problems not just a few threads...

There's a bleed valve on the radiator, and it bleeds coolant. The outlet pipe is at the bottom of the radiator, but points upwards  (X19) the 135 bend aims it back down towards the centre spine pipes.

Chris, there was a bit of steel pipework on my donor 164 that had a large bore straight section and a very small pipe 'T'ed off it. If you could find one of those, a short length of small-bore to a bleed could help?? Or a DIY job like I put in the top-hose of a fake snake a few years ago.......it had the rad fan Otter switch in the bottom of the pipe and an air bleed in the top.

......or simply bend the offending hose temporarily by hand to allow the offending air bubble to return into the rad where it can be bled off alternatively simply squeeze it a few times to shift the air, I too have this up and over pipe but have never had a problem with air in it.

I've tried that , but no luck. Maybe my wrist action is wrong! I

Demon Tweeks will order up Samco hoses with a bleed valve installed. I have some on my car.

Must have improved my wrist action. Progress today - all gauges working, nothing leaking. My expansion tank is a bit small - If I fill it to max, it expands to fill the whole bottle, but doesn't overflow, so should be OK. I just need to decide when I can add the water wetter without it ending up on the floor when I disconnect something.
One puzzle though. I ran the engine up to temperature, drained the oil, filled up with flushing oil. This was less than a full fill as advised on the container, so I had to run at 1000rpm to keep the oil pressure light off - I'm using a higher pressure switch than standard. When I drained the flushing oil, about twice as much oil came out as when I'd drained it the first time.
Has the flushing oil opened up some gallery and freed up some trapped oil? The oilstat (if there is one) was open at the first drainage - the oil cooler was hot.
