Is that to avoid paying Road Fund Duty by any chance? I have to strongly advise you that it would not be a good idea!
Kit cars have to be legally registered and properly described on their log books/registration documents. Upon registration they would be issued with an age related plate but the date would be that of the major components. It is my understanding that the car cannot be classified as new but cannot be considered as 25 years old to avoid RFL.
Should you find a car registered that early I would be VERY wary about buying it without checking the registration document. If it is described as a Lancia Beta then it won't have been inspected and is illegally registered. In order to get it legally registered now it will have to go through the SVA test which is very likely to be very expensive for an older kit. Walk away from it!
The other side is that the Stratos only came into being in 1973 so a pre 73 plate is inappropriate! If you want a dateless plate then buy one but don't let £180 pa put you off the kit!
Cheers

Guy, Thats an interesting one. I have a Midas with a 1964 Reg document. The local office have stated they will issue a payment free tax disc. They consider the car fully legal and have no wish to re-inspect it.

PS Dan did state 83? any other reason for this?

Must learn to read - of course Dan said pre 83 so please ignore most of my diatribe! There is nothing to stop you getting a post 83 car and putting an earlier plate on it though!
When was the Midas inspected last and how is it described on the reg docs? If they've said they don't want to see it again keep the letter safe!
