IT'S NOT EVEN MID-ENGINED,
SO WHAT'S THE POINT...

Hmm.... I'm no engineer but I'm not sure about the lack of a crossbrace between the top front suspension mounts... And the RS200 was RWD as Panos points out! Does solve the light front end problem though!

The RS200 was 4 wheel drive, as is this copy. The original did, as you point out have rear engine. Hmm, I'd like a real one though.

How many rallies did it win?

None, did it? I thought Group B was disbanded just as the RS200 was entering service. Or was that the 6R4?
Regardless, I always thought the RS200 was a good looking machine. Not as handsome as a Stratos or 037, perhaps, but good looking nonetheless.
Have to agree with Guy about the frame, though. And I am an engineer. It looks a trifle underdeveloped, and would probably need a lot of work to get satisfactory performance out of it. Might be fun for someone wanting to get into kit car manufacturing.
Anybody think Gerry would want to add a third line to the Hawk catalog?

The late Mark Lovell won the British based international open championship (Manx, Scottish, Circuit of Ireland etc.) with a works RS200 in 1986.
1987 would have been the year that the evolution RS200 saw the light of day. That's the one with the turbo BDA engine that was specially built for the RS200. It's a pity that they were only used in Rallycross after Group B was banned for 1987.
At least the T16, Delta S4 and 6R4 saw two seasons of World rallying. The RS200 only saw one.
All that Ford development money, wasted!

There have been a few attempts at RS200 replicas so far.
I recall one that seemed to have the look right, with a mid-engined design, but (I think) only rwd and not 4wd as the real thing. Not sure what happened with that one.
More recently, Banham has come up with an abortion of a replica (IMO) that has roughly-similar body panels stuck on top of - would you believe it? - a Maestro platform, with front wheel drive! Heresy many times over. And it doesn't even look good.
He also does something remotely resembling a Frogeye Sprite, based on Mini running gear, so is fwd and has the front raised about six inches from the original, due to this poor choice of donor parts.
Just to confuse things, I believe that Banham has actually purchased the rights and/or the moulds for original RS200 panels and can supply those to owners of the original car. Part of that deal, I think, is that he does NOT create a replica with the same body panels - hence his malformed designs on the fwd kit.
None of these comments appear to apply to this 'business opportunity' linked from this advert, but there cannot be that much demand for copies of this car - especially if they are not particularly close in 'replica' status.
As an aside, I personally think there isn't really enough demand for more than one manufacturer in producing Stratos replicas, but good luck to those that are in this line of business.
Back to this venture, I'd certainly be somewhat concerned if I was one of those who forms part of the '10K' order book...

[QUOTE]"would you believe it? - a Maestro platform"
I remember something about a Maestro based RS200, but I thought it was just a bad dream I'd had.

I used to have the brochure for that one - I was tempted as it at least had some promise of performance - it used the Sierra Cosworth engin/transmission/running gear. I must see if I can dig it out.

Hi Guys,
Me back from sea for a few weeks break.
RS200 panels only - remember the Reliant premises burnt down a few years ago? So who was laying-up the Ford panels - that's right, give the man a cigar.
And where are the moulds? Gone for ever. Ahhh, but where are the bucks for the moulds? Try on the roof of the premises owned by Mark, of TubeTorque, Macclesfield, if anyone is interested. Hasn't got the full set, but I believe has the major panels. As of about 2000, at least; I haven't been back for a while.
As a possible project, could have pitfalls. Apparently Ford insisted that for every replica built, NONE of the manufactured panels or parts should fit the original car, which to a degree explains why they all look "challenged". So anyone starting from the gen bucks would find themselves doing a deal of mould-making trying to get bits to fit, cos none of the ex-kit parts are anything like, and the originals are smoke.
All the best
Arthur.
I must get me mind hoovered out, its getting very cluttered with trivia in there.
