Hello,
my name is Michal, I'm from Poland. I'm building a x1/9 Abarth Prototipo replica. I saw stratos gr IV dashboard - there are push-pull switches on it. The same are in Prototipo central console. Do you know, from which popular (or not) car are them? I bought one on Ebay, but owner didn't know provenience of it. Switches are in yellow circle, they are two positions, witch little red light in centre of knob.
Thanks.

It's been a mystery to me for 15 years and now it is becoming more significant to find the answer for me as well with the impending installation of my Gp4 dashboard this year! I can find something that looks similar from a wiring supplier in the UK but it's not quite right and certainly doesn't have any illumination in the centre. So, if you manage to find out and find a source of them please let us know!

On the piccie posted above you can see the layout of the instruments on the Gp4 care but can anyone source the instruments? The rev counter is HUGE. The speedometer is like nothing I have ever seen before. It's at 9 o'clock on the yellow ring, reads to 250kph, no trip/odometer and is the size of the minor gauges! One of the other gauges combines a water temperature gauge and an oil pressure gauge (I think) and has a red needle and a white needle on a spindle like a watch! Amazing!

Few days ago i had the same speedometer in my hands. It's gauge from Jaroszewicz Stratos GrIV. Present owner don't want to sell it - i'd asked. As i remember - this gauge is Veglia. Water temp. is veglia too. I think, because its probably the same as veglia water gauge in Stratopolonez (picture in next reply)

Try this link and look on pages 4 and 5 of the switches setion of the catalogue. The ones on page 5 a the closest I have seen but the prices are too high!

If clicking on the link doesn't work just cut and paste it!

Ok - just in case somebody doesn't know - the gauges in the picture posted by mi77 are the correct ones for th G4 dash. Notice how the two on the right point up instead of down. The picture with gauges that point down is from a car that was converted to a G4 dash. These conversions often retain some of the original gauges from the Stradale dash. Finding the Tach and double-temp gauge make finding a veglia ammeter look like childs play. Seems like Dennis McCann knew a shop that was run by some former Veglia guys who could make these items. Seems like they were VERY expensive though - I want to say over $2500 but I can't remember if that was just those two or the whole set. This was way to rich for my blood so I just used VDO.

As for the switches, they sell one that is very close at AutoZone. I just bought these and sanded them so they'd have the same smooth texture.

I don't think the original components would be worth the cost unless you (A.) got very lucky at a garage sale, (B.) were very very patient and (C.) the rest of your replica was up to the task - ferrari engine, etc.

Just my .02,

John B.

JohnB:
Do you have a picture of this switch from AutoZone?
The AutoZone where you bought it it's the same autozone : www.autozone.com ?

Those pull-switches were common on 1960s Italian cars and the non-illuminated version was last seen on the Fiat 500 in the 1970's. The illuminated version was used recently on the short-lived Bugatti EB110. The ones I have, show no makers name but a star symbol in a circle on the back and are probably pattern parts.

Guy,

Doesn't the red needle just follow the white needle up but not down the scale and thus record the maximum reading???

Also, if you're looking for 50mm speedo try classic motorcylces, I bet Ducati's would be worth looking at. I've definatly seen 50mm speedo's on old motorbikes.

Roberto Cassetta might have some information on this - I know he can remanufacture some Veglia guages.

Oops, my observation about the switches coming from ordinary Fiat 500s was wrong! Mine had been fitted by a previous owner in place of the original up/down toggle switches. They were certainly standard equipment on many popular cars, probably from an earlier period.

I tried to upload an image of the gauge to the Members Gallery but the file size is too big and this idiot doesn't know how to reduce it! I took it at the Goodwood FOS last year from Munaris Stratos, the gauge has a white scale with a white needle and a white "Acqua" logo above the needle. There is a second, red, needle on the same pivot point (obviously the white needles' pivot is hollow) with a red "Olio" logo underneath the needle. Obviously a dual temperature gauge. Amazing!

Guy's correct (as usual :)) - the dual gauge measures both the water and the oil temp at the same time. The red needle does not simply indicate the max of the white needle. While I'm sure both gauges are authentic, it is interesting to note that the gauge from the G4 stratos and the gauge from the Stratopolonez have their needle colors reversed.

I'll try to upload a picture of the switches on my dash later. They pretty much look exactly like switch 4 on page 5 of the catalog Guy posted the link to. There is a 3 position version that is fused and a 2 positon version that is not. They cost about 4 USD which I believe at the current exchange rate works out to about .25 GBP ;).

Somehow I've lost my good dash pics - this is the best I've got till I can take some more. Sorry you can't see the switches more clearly.

Pedals for the navigator? Or is it dual control for teaching driving lessons?

That picture was taken before I'd pulled the old pedals out. The car is (slowly) being converted to LHD. Will post some pics of the new pedals after we weld in a few more brackets.

I've been using these guys for years for those little bits and pieces but hadn't realised they were on line now! Always used their mail order catalogue! I will be getting my switches from them as well as the wiring when I find the ISO standard colours chart! The switches may not be 100% right but they are reasonably priced and replaceable later!

These people do an illuminated pull switch from the "50s & 60s".Difficult to tell from the photo if it's right. See under "switches", about half way down.homepage (http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/)

Thanks for the searches Chris, I have looked on the SVC stand at most of the the shows over the last 10 years hoping they would turn up the correct ones but I guess we'll have to go to Italy for them! (Anyone up for a detour after the trip next year to Monte Carlo?). SVC stands for Stafford Vehicle Components and Anthony Stafford, the founder, is a very good friend of Gerrys! I know he has since retired but Gerry is still very friendly with the current owners, not sure if it's the same family, but the result is the same! Small discounts!
